HOW AN ERROR BECAME A PEDAGOGICAL SYSTEM

The Post-Soviet Doctrine of the “Automatic Fighter” and the Myth of the Physiological Superiority of Defense

After 1991, the Russian-speaking martial arts world underwent an extraordinary expansion. New schools, proprietary systems, self-defense programs, methods of applied hand-to-hand combat, bodyguard training courses, and various forms of “special” tactical instruction appeared at remarkable speed. Some invoked military experience; others appealed to karate, traditional Russian fighting systems, psychology, physiology, or supposedly ancient methods of human development.

Despite their considerable differences, many of these systems shared a strikingly similar underlying idea. Conscious thought was said to be too slow. Thinking during combat was treated as dangerous. The body was expected to respond by itself. The subconscious mind was presumed to act faster than conscious cognition. Skill was considered complete only when action occurred without deliberate decision-making. Relaxation was associated with greater speed. And defensive action was often attributed a special physiological advantage over attack.

Over time, these propositions ceased to function merely as training metaphors. They increasingly came to be presented as laws of human biology.

What emerged was a distinctly post-Soviet pedagogical model that may be described as the doctrine of the automatic fighter.

The Attraction of a Precise Number

One of the clearest numerical expressions of this doctrine appears in the writings of Andrei Georgievich Kuptsov. Kuptsov gives two remarkably precise values: defensive reaction — 0.01 seconds; offensive reaction — 0.03 seconds.

The ratio is simple: one to three. From this follows an elegant and memorable conclusion: defense is three times faster than attack.

Kuptsov goes further. He links this formula to karate and to a specific psychological orientation of the defender. In his interpretation, a practitioner must be shaped in such a way that the entire organization of his reactions belongs to a defensive mode.

The resulting structure is remarkably coherent: moral orientation → psychological state → physiological mode → reaction speed → tactical advantage.

On paper, the model appears persuasive. The difficulty is that ten milliseconds is not a plausible duration for a complete visual-motor defensive reaction in a human being.

That difficulty, however, leads to a much more interesting historical question. Where did the figures 0.01 and 0.03 seconds come from?

Soviet Sports Science Really Did Work with Such Numbers

Soviet sports psychophysiology made extensive use of a method known as the reaction to a moving object, commonly abbreviated in Russian as RDO. In a typical RDO task, the participant watched a moving pointer, light marker, or other moving stimulus and had to perform an action at a predetermined moment—for example, stopping the pointer exactly at a designated reference point.

This is not the same as waiting for an unexpected signal and then reacting to it. The participant can observe the movement in advance, estimate its velocity, and predict when the target moment will occur.

The task therefore includes an essential component: anticipation.

The experiment may then record whether the participant acted too early or too late. A protocol might contain values such as −0.01 s — the response occurred ten milliseconds too early; +0.03 s — the response occurred thirty milliseconds too late.

These values are strikingly close to Kuptsov’s figures. But their meaning is entirely different.

A value of 0.03 seconds may indicate not that the nervous system “reacted in thirty milliseconds,” but rather that the participant missed the predicted target moment by thirty milliseconds.

That distinction is fundamental.

How a Number Loses Its Meaning

Scientific myths are not always created by inventing data. Often, the number itself is genuine. The experiment is genuine. The measuring instrument is genuine. What disappears is the meaning of the measured variable.

Imagine a notation such as: RDO = 0.03 s. For a specialist, this may refer to temporal error, anticipatory accuracy, or the magnitude of deviation from a target moment.

In a popular retelling, however, only two elements may survive: “reaction” and “0.03 seconds.”

The next writer may therefore repeat the statement as: Human reaction time is 0.03 seconds.

Several stages later, the number becomes detached from the original experimental procedure altogether.

This is one of the most persistent mechanisms by which scientific measurements are transformed into pseudoscientific laws. The number remains precise. The meaning does not.

Karate and RDO Had Already Met in the Soviet Union

The connection between karate and reaction-time research did not emerge only after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In 1973, E. K. Akhmerov and Professor A. A. Loginov published a study devoted to the registration of sport-specific reaction to a moving object in volleyball players.

Two years later, in 1975, Alexander Dmitrievich Kozhemyakin, working under Loginov’s supervision, completed a study entitled: “Changes in Reaction Time to a Moving Object under the Influence of Karate Training.”

The numerical results of Kozhemyakin’s study have not yet been recovered, and therefore it would be methodologically unacceptable to claim that Kuptsov’s values of 0.01 and 0.03 seconds originated there.

Nevertheless, the historical fact itself matters. By the mid-1970s, Soviet researchers had already established an intellectual connection between karate — reaction — anticipation — measurement of time.

The scientific and cultural environment in which such numbers could later acquire a martial interpretation already existed.

Why the Idea Expanded So Rapidly after 1991

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the demand for martial and “practical” training expanded dramatically.

People sought: self-defense; special-forces methods; “secret” military systems; bodyguard training; Russian martial styles; Eastern martial arts; psychophysical practices; methods of survival and personal security.

Into this rapidly developing environment flowed fragments of Soviet sports science, karate, aikido, judo, fencing, yoga, popular psychology, military culture, and speculative ideas about hidden human capacities.

Gradually, a distinctive model of the human being emerged.

According to this model, the individual possesses an internal system of response more effective than conscious reasoning. Consciousness interferes. The body knows. The subconscious is faster. Mastery is achieved when thought no longer delays action.

The idea was extraordinarily attractive. It was simple. It appeared scientific. And it promised to solve one of the most difficult problems in combat: the shortage of time.

“You Cannot Think in a Fight”

One of the most frequently repeated propositions in these systems is that a person cannot afford to think during real combat. Taken in a limited sense, the statement is reasonable. A fighter cannot conduct a lengthy internal analysis of every movement while punches are being exchanged.

The problem begins with the next step. From the proposition “extended conscious analysis is too slow” one moves to “conscious cognition should not participate at all.”

From there, it is only a small step to “the subconscious knows what to do better than the conscious mind.”

A pedagogical principle concerning the automation of movement becomes a philosophy of the automatic human being.

Kadochnikov’s System and Related Approaches

In materials associated with the Kadochnikov system, considerable importance is placed on natural movement, reduction of unnecessary muscular tension, freedom from rigidly memorized technical patterns, and the ability to act without hesitation.

Many of these principles are perfectly rational. The difficulty arises when an efficient motor principle is interpreted as evidence of a special physiological state in which conscious cognition must be removed so that the body can “select” the correct response by itself.

At that point, motor learning is transformed into a broader anthropology. The issue is no longer merely how movement becomes more efficient. The issue becomes what kind of human being is believed to be most effective under pressure.

“The Body Will React by Itself”

A particularly revealing formulation can be found in materials associated with Dmitry Skogorev’s approach to Russian hand-to-hand combat: when the basic principles are properly assimilated, the body is expected to respond to aggression appropriately by itself.

This is an important conceptual shift. The acting subject is no longer the person as a system of perception, judgment, and decision. The body itself becomes the decision-maker.

The idea appears repeatedly, in different vocabulary, throughout post-Soviet martial literature.

Shou-Dao and the Cult of the Subconscious

In writings associated with Shou-Dao and related psychophysical systems, technical material is often described as something that must be embedded deeply enough in the subconscious for action to arise spontaneously and intuitively.

Once again, there is a rational core. Motor skills must indeed become highly automated.

But the meaning of automation gradually expands. First, the execution of movement becomes automatic. Then the choice of technique becomes automatic. Then the entire tactical situation is supposedly evaluated automatically. Eventually, the ideal fighter no longer appears to make decisions at all.

He simply “responds.”

“Only the Body Should React”

In some instructional literature, this principle becomes almost explicit. Conscious analysis is treated as an obstacle. The situation itself should directly trigger the correct action.

This model is attractive because it appears to eliminate uncertainty. If the body already knows the right response, then the practitioner no longer has to hesitate, compare alternatives, or make a decision.

But real conflict is defined precisely by the opposite condition. The correct response is not known in advance.

When Neuroscience Was Added to the Myth

The next stage in the development of the doctrine involved an attempt to justify it scientifically. Popular martial and psychological literature began to contrast consciousness and the subconscious; analytic and holistic perception; the left and right hemispheres; reflex and thought.

Precise numerical claims began to appear, suggesting that one form of recognition required only a few dozen milliseconds while another required several hundred.

At this point the slogan “do not think” acquired the appearance of laboratory evidence.

The argument took on a complete form: science has proved it → consciousness is slow → the subconscious is fast → the master does not think → the body acts by itself.

Once clothed in scientific terminology, the pedagogical myth became far more resistant to criticism.

The One-to-Three Ratio Acquired a Life of Its Own

Of particular importance is the fact that Kuptsov’s formula did not remain confined to his own writing. Applied hand-to-hand combat literature contains the assertion that the reaction time of attack is almost three times greater than the reaction time of defense.

In other words, the 1:3 ratio itself began to circulate as a supposedly established fact.

This is characteristic of successful myths. After several generations of repetition, the original source becomes irrelevant. It is replaced by a formula such as: “It is well known that…”

From there, the claim moves from book to book, instructor to instructor, seminar to seminar, and from one martial system into another.

Not One Error, but an Entire Cluster of Beliefs

The post-Soviet martial arts environment gradually produced a mutually reinforcing set of propositions: defense is faster than attack; reflex is faster than conscious action; the subconscious decides faster and more accurately than consciousness; a good fighter does not think; relaxation automatically increases reaction speed; if a technique is “written into the body,” the body will select the correct action; a special mental state can produce nearly instantaneous responses.

Taken separately, several of these ideas contain an element of truth. Together, however, they produce a very different model of the human being.

It is a model in which mastery appears to require progressively less cognition.

Why the Model Was So Convincing

The doctrine survived because it was anchored in real experience. An experienced fighter often does appear to act faster than a beginner. But the difference need not lie in a nervous system operating several times faster.

The expert notices meaningful information earlier. He judges distance more accurately. He identifies familiar patterns more rapidly. He entertains fewer irrelevant alternatives. He possesses well-developed motor programs. He predicts the development of the encounter more effectively.

The advantage therefore lies not only in the speed of execution. It lies in the timing of information acquisition.

The Master Does Not Necessarily Think Less

A more accurate statement would be that the expert distributes cognition differently in time.

The novice sees the punch.

The expert sees what precedes the punch: a shift of body weight; a change in distance; the position of the pelvis; rotation of the shoulder; the beginning of a step; a disruption of rhythm; a change in muscular tension; a change in visual fixation.

The expert’s response therefore appears instantaneous. But it did not arise from nothing. Information processing began earlier.

This is the practical significance of anticipation.

Automation Exists—but Not Where It Was Often Placed

Automated execution is essential. A fighter should not consciously calculate the angle of every joint or deliberately activate each muscle during a strike.

But automated execution is not the same thing as automated decision-making. This distinction is fundamental.

In an actual conflict, the practitioner must continue to answer questions such as: What is happening? Who constitutes the threat? What action is justified? Has the situation changed? Should the action continue? Should it stop?

If decision-making is entirely replaced by automation, the practitioner may simply become faster at making a pre-programmed mistake.

The Central Pedagogical Error

The principal error of many post-Soviet systems was not their attempt to automate movement. That is a normal and necessary objective of training.

The problem arose when the automation of execution was transferred to the automation of choice.

This produced the dream of a fighter who no longer had to decide. A stimulus would directly trigger the correct response.

Yet conflict does not consist of perfectly known stimuli. It consists of ambiguous situations.

For that reason, a professional must not only be capable of acting quickly. He must also be capable of not responding automatically when the context has changed.

The Myth of “Natural Movement” and the Culture of Health

A similar anthropology was present in the post-Soviet wellness culture. There, people were told: do not interfere with the organism; the body knows what it needs; release natural mechanisms; proper breathing will activate internal resources; relaxation restores natural regulation.

In martial systems, the formula sounded remarkably similar: do not think; do not tense unnecessarily; do not interfere with the body; allow the correct reaction to emerge.

The worlds of health culture and martial arts therefore often relied on the same underlying assumption.

Inside the human being, there supposedly exists a hidden automatic mechanism more intelligent and more effective than conscious control.

The practitioner’s task is simply to stop obstructing it.

From Wellness Culture to Special Training

This model eventually penetrated areas in which errors could have consequences far beyond sport. Applied hand-to-hand combat, bodyguard training, personal-security courses, and certain forms of tactical instruction frequently repeated some version of: do not think—act.

The formulation came to be treated as a sign of professionalism.

But a professional is not defined by the absence of cognition. He is defined by superior recognition, better procedures, faster and more accurate choice, and the ability to change course when circumstances change.

Stimulus—Response Is Too Simple a Model

Professional action was increasingly described as if it were a reflex chain: stimulus → reaction.

Actual conflict requires something closer to: observation → anticipation → recognition → decision → action → evaluation of the result.

And if the situation changes, the cycle begins again.

For this reason, the most dangerous automatic response is not necessarily a badly learned one. It may be a response that was once correct but is now being applied to the wrong situation.

What Should Replace the Automatic-Fighter Model?

The answer is not to reject automation. It is to locate automation correctly within the architecture of skill.

One should automate execution. But one should preserve choice.

A more adequate model of combat preparation therefore looks like this: observation; anticipation; recognition; reduction of irrelevant alternatives; decision; automated execution; evaluation of the result; adaptation when necessary.

This is more complicated than the slogan “do not think.” It is also considerably closer to real professional performance.

What Remains of the Claim That “Defense Is Faster Than Attack”?

Once the myth is removed, an important rational core remains. A prepared defender can indeed obtain a temporal advantage.

But not because there exists a biological constant of 0.01 seconds.

The advantage may arise because the defender expects a particular class of events; detects preparatory signs earlier; has already reduced the number of possible responses; maintains a prepared motor program; uses the opponent’s movement as a triggering signal.

The more accurate formulation is therefore not: defense is faster than attack, but: a prepared system may begin its response earlier.

That is a very different proposition.

It is also a much more useful one for training.

Why the Myth Was So Durable

The doctrine supplied four things simultaneously.

Scientific authority. It spoke of the nervous system, reflexes, milliseconds, and physiology.

Tradition. It could appeal to karate, Eastern philosophy, or supposedly ancient knowledge.

Practicality. It promised rapid preparation for real conflict.

Mystery. It implied the existence of a special state of mastery inaccessible to the ordinary person.

For the intellectual culture of the 1990s, this was an almost ideal combination.

0.01 and 0.03 Are Not Merely Two Incorrect Numbers

If the problem concerned nothing more than an inaccurate physiological claim, it would hardly justify extensive investigation.

The importance of these numbers lies elsewhere.

They illuminate a much broader process through which Soviet sports science, Eastern martial arts, wellness culture, popular psychology, military mythology, and post-Soviet instructional practice became mixed within the same intellectual environment.

Within that environment emerged a distinctive ideal of the fighter: a person who performs better precisely when he ceases to think.

That proposition became one of the most influential pedagogical ideas in the Russian-speaking martial arts culture of the 1990s and 2000s.

Conclusion

The history of martial arts in the Russian-speaking world is usually written as a history of schools, masters, techniques, and lineages.

No less important, however, is the history of the ideas about the human being that stood behind those systems.

One of the most influential was the belief in the automatic fighter.

A fighter who supposedly acts faster than thought.

A fighter whose subconscious mind selects the correct response.

A fighter whose defense is physiologically faster than attack.

A fighter who requires progressively less conscious control as mastery increases.

Today, that model can be reconsidered.

Mastery is not the absence of cognition.

It is earlier perception, more accurate recognition, fewer irrelevant alternatives, and more efficient execution.

The expert does not necessarily think less.

He understands what is happening earlier.

That may be the central difference between genuine combat preparation and the mythology of the “super-fast reaction.”

And this is why two small numbers—

0.01 and 0.03

—are not merely a curiosity.

They are a useful entry point into the intellectual history of an entire era of Russian-speaking martial arts.
